Neither of the children lived to the age of seven, however, and John died in 1875. When Jefferson married Emeline, this caused John and Cora to live together, and together they gave birth to two girls- Adaline and Angeline Cox. Jefferson Huff had his own slave named John from Tennessee. This is most likely the time after which the house was built. In the 1860 Linn County Census, she is listed as a black slave under the Jefferson and Emeline Huff household at age 32.Īt some point after 1852, Samuel died, and in 1859 Emeline was re-married to Jefferson Huff Emeline then turned over 36.3 acres of Johnson’s land to Cox for “faithful services rendered” in 1864. In 1852, the Johnsons were issued almost 640 acres of Brownsville land in their Donation Land Claim. They then emigrated to Oregon that same year, probably taking Cox with them. Originally born in Virginia, Cora Ann Cox was purchased in New Orleans in 1837 by Emeline Carey, who married Samuel Johnson in 1850 in Missouri. Attached to the east elevation of this addition is an even more recent addition clad in both horizontal and vertical weatherboard siding with no apparent pattern, with a gable metal roof reaching two stories. To the rear is also a small shed addition, post-dating the original construction, with both horizontal wood weatherboard and wood shingle siding, and a shed roof with exposed rafter tails. The primary window type is 4/4 wood double hung with decorative hood mouldings the front also houses a small, centrally-placed entry porch with shed roof and trefoil cut-out patterned boards under the porch’s own moulded cornice and broad friezeboard the porch posts also features decorative brackets. The gable roof is clad with composite shingles on the west half and metal on the east half, and there is a central brick chimney.

The house is clad with horizontal wood weatherboard siding and the rear gable is clad with shingle siding with cornerboards and broad rake- and frieze-boards and moulded cornice. The house stands 1-1/2 stories tall in the Classic Revival style with a Gothic Revival style entry porch, resting upon a post-and-pier wood foundation in a gable-front plan. Based mostly upon its architectural elements, it appears to have been built circa 1870. The house faces north at 34840 Lake Creek Drive and shares the lot with a newer house at 34844 Lake Creek Drive. The Cora Ann Cox House is located approximately ¾ miles south of Brownsville on the south side of Lake Creek Drive.
